Customer spotlight: Miami International Airport

When former Secretary Tom Ridge and other U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials sought a major American airport as a national role model for state-of-the-art aviation access control and security, they visited Miami International Airport (MIA) in Dade County, Fla. Once there, Raynier Davalos, MIA’s building systems support manager, demonstrated the monitoring and control of most system components in a laboratory built specially to test the newly installed system.

The unique testing laboratory, which most U.S. international airports don’t have, is one of the reasons. The testing facility is a working miniature replica of the entire security system at MIA, which had over 32 million passengers pass through in 2006.

Another reason for its superiority in airport security is MIA’s access control system, which is manufactured by Matrix Systems. During the major security upgrade, the Matrix Frontier software system was updated from the original Matrix legacy system that MIA installed in the early 1990s to the latest state-of-the-art Frontier software version.

The advantage of using Matrix Systems, according to Davalos, is it always custom designs its software to meet a customer’s specific needs. Plus, Matrix also manufactures the hardware, installs the system, and provides 24x7 customer service. “With other systems incorporating a variety of hardware vendors, integrators, and other suppliers, access control becomes a difficult task due to the reluctance to modify an “off-the-shelf product,” said Davalos. “The reality is that every facility has unique security needs and therefore requires a system that’s adapted to meet those needs.”

Brivo Systems partnership announced

Matrix Systems and Brivo Systems have partnered together to provide web-hosted access control and security solutions for businesses without on-site IT departments and equipment. Matrix will sell the Brivo system in addition to its already robust security access control product line.

The partnership enables prospective Matrix customers an affordable access control and security system that needs only an Internet connection, web browser, and door subsystem hardware. Via the Internet, Brivo provides all servers, IT personnel support, maintenance, software licensing/upgrades, back-ups, redundancy, and other software costs associated with on-site access control and security management. In most cases, a site’s existing Wiegand output readers and door-locking hardware can be retrofitted or new door controllers, readers, and door-locking hardware can be purchased/leased and installed.

You probably know that you can easily search for badge records with Matrix Frontier software. But did you know that there are three ways to search for a badge record to help make you more efficient in your job?

First, there is a Badge Quick Search, which lets you search for a badge record by last, first, or middle name, the badge number, the printed number, or the taxpayer ID fields, any of which can be set as the default. If needed, the default fields can be changed to substitute fields of your choice and can be configured to include fields that are linked to other tables, such as job titles, departments, and date fields.

There may be times when you need to redefine your search even further. If so, you can perform an Extended Search by clicking on the “Find” icon. As you know, in the Badge Search window, General, Employment, Access, Vehicle, Other, and Events tabs are available. You can do an Extended Search by using only one field, or a combination of multiple fields from multiple tabs, to narrow your search criteria. Frontier makes it easy since you only need to enter the first letter for all of the text fields, unless otherwise noted. Depending on your system configuration, you may also enter a percent sign (%) for use as a wildcard.

Finally, an Advanced Find search lets you enter even more search criteria. The Advanced Find capability, available with Frontier version 5.7.3 or higher, can be found on your Badge Setup Find screen. Advanced Find includes the following additional types of search criteria: all fields from the badge tabs, whereabouts information, the use of AND and OR in the query, SQL comparison operators, and the direct entry of a SQL query along with a syntax checker to verify the validity of the query. The Advanced Find search criteria can also be saved as a part of your Favorites.
